You can listen to Scott Stapp's interview with Washington D.C.'s Z104.
Morning show personalities: J.C. Fernandez, Erica Hilary and Yianni Lolos
J.C.: On the verge of entering the z104 studios ladies and gentlemen,
Erica: Yes
J.C.: Another huge artist, frontman for the band Creed, I mean one of the bigger
Erica: Big, big band
J.C.: Bigger bands of the last 5, 6 years, definitely as you hear the dumpster being emptied outside.
Erica: What is up with that? Scoop me up man
J.C.: Oh great. Scott will enjoy that. He's got a guitarist with him, hopefully we can get him to do a song for us here in the studio. We've got to find out what happened with Creed, why did they break up? What was the deal there?
Erica: I've always wanted to hear his perspective on that 'cause we always hear from the other guy, Tremonti
J.C.: Yeah, he talks about it all the time
Erica: Yeah, he loves to talk about it.
J.C.: Scott hasn't said much about it. And he's got a song on The Passion of the Christ soundtrack, Mel Gibson produced that movie, as you all know. I wonder if Scott Stapp got to meet Mel Gibson or not. Wonder what they two of them might of had to talk about
Erica: Let's find out
J.C.: Scott Stapp joining us in the studio. Scott what's up?
Scott: Thank you for having me man, it's awesome to be here.
J.C.: Well, thank you for being here and just to get right out with it, I've talked to so many people lately, they got wind of the fact that you were coming here. They wanted me to ask, first of all, all of your fans. Can you tell from your point of view
Scott: Yep
J.C.: What happened with Creed?
Scott: It's pretty easy man, you know me and Mark had worked together for a long time collaborating on the songs and Mark really wanted to branch out and do all the writing himself and actually sing. He wanted to front his own band
J.C.: Really?
Scott: And you know, so I was also getting involved in acting and wanting to test a film career, which I'm still involved in, and possibly have a film out next year. So we had talked about it since '99 and a you know, after we had a real rough year, in terms of my health in 2001 into 2002 and it just kinda accelerated the process a little quicker and so, you know basically it was just, it was time, you know, for both of us to branch off and do our own thing and you know I'm excited about the solo stuff and the new music and you know, so it's been a good thing. The doors always opened, down the road, you know for a possible reunion and a Creed album four, but as of now, it's just going our separate ways for a while.
J.C.: Some people say that they're most inspired when they're songwriting by their own personal life
Scott: Yeah
J.C.: Things that have happened to them in the past, things that continue to happen to them as they go through the every day life that they have. Some people say they're inspired by the spiritual side of themselves
Scott: Right
J.C.: How about what inspires you
Scott: All of that. You know, pretty much the only thing that doesn't inspire me to write music is being happy. You know when I'm happy I wanna go out and party.
Erica: Right, enjoy it. Surely your little boy must inspire you.
Scott: Yeah, he's inspired me quite a bit.
Erica: How old is he now?
Scott: He'll be six tomorrow.
Erica: Wow
Scott: Of course, With Arms Wide Open came from that. And then a few other songs, that I don't really like to talk about what they mean because I think it's cool that the song can be out there and mean something different to everybody.
J.C.: Absolutely
Scott: But he's inspired quite a few other songs that I've written.
J.C.: Actually, you've mentioned your son Jagger. I actually met Jagger, believe it or not.
Erica: You did?
Scott: Oh yeah
J.C.: It was back in the year, it was 2000. It was the VH1 Fairway to Heaven in Las Vegas and Scott was out there and he had his son out there. I was doing a radio thing and I met Scott, I met his son Jagger, I met Will Smith, Bret Michaels of Poison and Charlize Theron.
Scott: You know Bret Michaels was on my tour bus later on that day playing Every Rose Has Its Thorn.
J.C.: Was he really?
Scott: Queensryche was on there. It was funny, it was Bret Michaels, Queensryche, and Edwin McCain, whom I love, he's a great guy. They were all, Edwin played (Scott starts to sing) I'll be your
J.C.: Yep
Scott: And then Bret breaks out, you know, Every Rose Has Its Thorn and then Queensryche plays Silent Lucidity.
J.C.: Oh my gosh, are you kidding me?
Scott: It was hilarious, actually. It was great night. It was fun.
J.C.: Did Charlize Theron come on the tour bus and do her thing, whatever she does.
Scott: I wish, I wish. I'm one of those shy guys with girls, like I have a hard time approaching them.
Erica: Why don't you let Jagger approach them?
Scott: He does
Erica: The kid's your calling card.
J.C.: He's your conversation piece.
Scott: Listen, he does. He brought me a phone number home from school the other day he's like hey, this is my teacher, Ms. Wilson" (laughter) and he's like Dad, I think you'd really like her, here's her number" and he actually had her phone number. I don't know how. It was hilarious.
Erica: That's great
J.C.: He can bring you in for Show and Tell. Scott Stapp in studio today with us here at Z104. You have a song on The Passion of the Christ soundtrack Scott, it's called Relearn Love. Did you get to meet Mel Gibson?
Scott: Yes I did
J.C.: How cool was that?
Scott: He was very cool
J.C.: He seems like the coolest guy ever. He's got like 20 kids.
Scott: Real cool and his kids, you know I played him kinda the version of Relearn Love that I had prior to seeing the film, when I was in his office and I was like what'd you think?" and he was like You know, I called because you're my kids favorite band and they said that you'd be perfect for this and so I trust my kids on this kinda stuff and I trust you. Just do your thing and write me a hit song."
Laughter
Scott: I was like okay, you know no pressure there"
J.C.: I think you did a pretty good job Scott. I've heard the song. Why don't we go ahead and play it for everybody now. We'll come back, talk to you a little bit more o nZ104. Scott Stapp's Relearn Love from The Passion of the Christ soundtrack on Z104
Scott: Cool
Relearn Love is played
Applause
J.C.: You heard Scott Stapp and Relearn Love on Z104
Scott: Thank you
J.C.: It's on The Passion of the Christ soundtrack now and Scott's solo CD comes out in the Spring
Scott: Yes
J.C.: 2005
Scott: Spring 2005
J.C.: Well, we're lucky enough to have you and a guitarist here today, so what would a visit from Scott Stapp be without a little live music.
Scott: Yeah, yeah. I was thinking we'd play a song off of Human Clay, '99 that came out and let you know Creed's Greatest Hits will be out, I've been saying all over the place November 18th , it's actually November 23rd.
J.C.: Okay
Scott: This song is called Higher
J.C.: Right on man. Scott Stapp doings Creed's Higher on Z104
Scott sings Higher
Applause
Scott: Thank you
J.C.: You can sing your ass off man
Scott laughs
J.C.: Scott's like gettin' the feeling, he's like the Ray Charles thing, the face, he's all in in it
Scott laughs
Erica: It's a work out the way he sings
J.C.: I'm telling you I love that
Scott: Thank you. Thank you
J.C.: That song to me is always a cool, because it's a hard song, it's like it gets you up and it gets you moving, gets you energized and it's got, basically an underlying positive message and that's what I think about it.
Erica: It's got heart
Scott: Yeah. Well, thank you. I try to always write from that place, you know I used to tell the guys when they would get kinda down, thinking that you know we were never gonna get a break or something I was like guys passion breeds followers man and we're all passionate about what we do" and in retrospect, you know that's where it comes from.
Erica: I read somewhere that you wrote you first song in fifth grade.
Scott: Yeah. Either fourth or fifth grade. Probably about this girl named Eva Snider
Erica: Ah yes, Eva
J.C.: You still remember her name
Scott: Who, she dumped me for a sixth grader. (Laughter) She was my girlfriend from kindergarten to fourth grade and then in fourth grade I wasn't cool anymore. The sixth grader was cool because he had a Mongoose California.
J.C.: I hated the kid with the Mongoose because I always had a Huffy.
Yianni: I had the Schwinn
Scott: I had the Sears purple bike with the banana seat.
J.C.: You had the Maypar bike, oh man
Scott: And then finally when I was like in seventh grade I got a Diamondback Silverstreak.
J.C.: Diamondback, that had to do it right there
Scott: I was I like, I was cool
Erica: You were like Eva check this out"
Scott: Yeah, exactly. You know, so it's cool. It's crazy how things go, you know.
J.C.: Scott, we can't thank you enough for stopping by D.C. and stopping by Z104 today, man.
Scott: Thank you guys so much for having me man. And I look forward to seeing you guys when I'm tour and some promotion early next year for the solo album. Can't wait to get back man, you guys rock.
J.C.: Awesome. Thank you very much. Scott Stapp.
Applause
