You can listen to Scott Stapp's interview with Kent & Alan from Seattle's STAR 101.5.
K&A: STAR 101.5, the best mix of the 80's, 90's and today. It is 8:02 with Kent & Alan.
K&A: Alright in the other studio right now we are bringing in some listeners who came in to watch Scott Stapp perform. Scott is having some tea in the second studio. They are getting ready to perform for us live on the air. His new CD is called Relearn Love. See if we can chat with him in there to see how they're going in there.
K&A: Can you guys hear us okay?
Scott: Yeah man.
K&A: Hey good morning Scott. How are you?
Scott: Doing wonderful. Good to be here.
K&A: Welcome back to Seattle. I went on Google and searched your name out. I don't have time to go through this. 37,400 references to Scott Stapp. I found your Scott Stapp website here.
Scott: Now does that include my criminal record?
K&A: We didn't wanna go there.
Scott: (laughs) I'm just kidding.
K&A: There's some of that stuff there to. They've got everything. (Laughs)
Scott: Hey, I've never been convicted man. It wasn't me.
(Laughter)
K&A: Tell me about the new project. I don't think a lot of people know what you're up to with The Passion of the Christ: Songs CD.
Scott: Yeah. That was something I was fortunate to get involved with, um with Mel Gibson and Icon and a gentlemen named Mark Joseph. They called me up and they asked me if I wanted to actually write the title track to a CD that was basically songs inspired by The Passion of the Christ. So they flew me out to L.A. to have a private screening with Mel Gibson, which was cool 'cause I was a big fan of him. Then I wrote the song Relearn Love and basically going around the US right now in promotion of Relearn Love, which will also be on my solo album, which will be out some time in late February or late March. We don't quite know yet.
K&A: I was just asking about getting up this early in the morning and apparently you're used to this now.
Scott: Yeah. I have a five year old, (laughter) so I'm up at all hours. I get up and take him to school and make his breakfast, you know Mr. Mom.
K&A: Are you on West Coast time for the most part, you live on the West Coast?
Scott: Yes, I'm on Miami time, West Coast time - East Coast time - excuse me, I'm sorry.
K&A: East Coast time, okay.
Scott: So this is kinda cool because I feel like I'm getting an extra hour of sleep, two hours of sleep to be honest with you.
K&A: I'm anxious to hear this. This is the first new thing you've released in what? Three years, I think.
Scott: Yeah. It's the first new thing since 2001. Yeah. So, it's been three years. Gosh time flies.
K&A: What would you like to perform in just a little bit?
Scott: I think we're gonna do one off of Human Clay, the second Creed album, called Higher.
K&A: That would be awesome
(Plays Relearn Love)
K&A: What is the difference doing your own thing as compared to working with a band? You know, a lot of artists do with a band and then move on. Is it a different kind of sound you're going for? What's the difference?
Scott: Well, I wrote the songs along with Mark with Creed. So, a lot of the Creed sound and style is just the way I've always written music, so that'll stay with me. But, I think with getting to go and do a project on my own, I think I'll have a little more freedom to experiment in ways that I compromised and didn't in the past and for me that has a lot to do with the rhythm section, the drums and drum loops and so there's going to be a wide mixture of intense rock songs to the songs like we've just heard to you know, just, you know I really, to be honest with you, I really couldn't give you a definitive answer. It's probably going to be, feel a lot like to the fans like just a progression of a Creed album because you know, that is what I did. I mean, I will go places, musically that I didn't go with Creed, but it's probably going to remind a lot of people like that.
K&A: Now I don't want to sound like Dr. Phil here, but you look great.
Scott: Well, thank you.
K&A: How's your life altogether? Does everything just seem to be in a very positive, Leonard, our producer, says you even smell great, which is awesome.
Scott: Really?
(Laughter)
Scott: Well that's good, that's good, he hasn't smelled my breath yet though.
(Laughter)
K&A: Things are good for your family and everything else?
Scott: Yeah
K&A: I know there were tough times there in the middle. Things are going good?
Scott: Yeah. Everything is really, really going good. You know, it got with Creed where we were just gone 250 days a year and we did that for eight straight years and it just caught up with me, physically and I kind of burned out so to speak, physically and my voice had a lot of demands on it and needed to take some time off and during that time Mark decided that he wanted to do his own project and that was cool. I wasn't just going to sit around so, you know, I decided to do something myself. So, it's a real exciting time. I got a really good chance to spend a lot of great time with my son and stuff like that. So everything's just worked out great.
K&A: We've got Scott Stapp in with us this morning. In all these internet searches it does sound like it was an amicable departure with Creed like there's no big bloody mess fights that we can find.
Scott: No, it was good. It's something that we talked about even prior to writing Weathered - you know Mark and I wanting to go our own ways for a while and just do our own thing. You know Mark was really wanting to be the all in, he wanted to sing and write the songs in its entirety and he ended up bringing in Myles Kennedy from another band, who we were both big fans of that band so it wasn't a shocker and you know he's getting to do it his way and on his terms and I think a lot of times with bands, you know, it's like a marriage, there's a lot of compromises, even artistically and you know, I know that me and Mark, just like a married couple, disagreed on a lot of things but what we did realize is we had great chemistry and wrote real well together. So I'll never, ever have, have no feelings or intentions, but love and appreciation for the whole Creed experience and you know.
K&A: I think what a lot of people would love to hear, 'cause they know you from that the most, I know you've got your new CD coming out. Maybe you could do a Creed song here in just a second for us Scott.
Scott: Yeah man
K&A: We'll take a commercial break you could have some more of that hot tea and lemon early in morning. (Scott laughs) Get the voice ready to go. We'll be back with Creed's Higher with Scott Stapp here in a moment.
K&A: It's 8:16, it's STAR 101.5, Kent & Alan hanging out with Scott Stapp this morning. You probably remember him from Creed but now he's off on his own
K&A: Yep. The song, his big hit song is Relearn Love, which we'll be playing here a lot on STAR 101.5. But Scott, you want to look back and play something from the Creed days a little bit.
Scott: Yeah man. Definitely. We've got the Creed's Greatest Hits album coming out at the end of this month so I think I'm going to play Higher today. If you guys don't mind.
K&A: It's one of our favorites, we love that. Whenever you're ready
Scott: Alright. We'll do it.
(Scott sings Higher acoustically)
(Applause)
K&A: Man. How do you do that at this time in the morning? That is amazing.
Scott: Thank you. I don't know. You can probably hear on that last note. It was early but I gave it my best shot. (Scott laughs)
K&A: Wow
K&A: Creed's Greatest Hits are out later this month, of course Scott Stapp on The Passion of the Christ: Songs CD with Relearn Love is out right now and a new CD early next year. I think there is probably time Scott to write a song about your visit to the Kent & Alan show on your new CD.
(Laughter)
Scott: There definitely, definitely is. I know a song was inspired yesterday by that heartbreaker, that Rams game.
K&A: Now don't be talking about that.
Scott: I'm a big Alabama fan, so I follow all Alabama players in the league and Shaun Alexander played at 'Bama and
K&A: He had a great game yesterday.
Scott: He did. He did. He had like 155 yards or something a little more than that. I couldn't believe it. Hey, Hey I was throwing stuff at the TV too.
K&A: Well, it's wonderful. I'm glad the weather here is perfect for you in Seattle
Scott: Yeah man
K&A: Any plans on a tour down the line?
Scott: Yeah, definitely. I've even thought about possibly doing a tour before the year is out. But probably what I'll end up doing is doing a tour when my album comes out next late February or late March.
K&A: Alright, let's take one phone call then we'll let you go. Good morning you're on STAR 101.5.
Caller: That was the awesomest. That was great. It was wonderful.
Scott: Thank you so much
Caller: It brought tears to my eyes
Scott: Thank you so much. I appreciate that
Caller: It was fantastic
K&A: We were all moved by that.
K&A: Scott, really nice to meet you. Thank you so much for coming in. We look forward to all of that stuff coming out. Of course, The Passion of the Christ Songs is out now with Relearn Love. Thank you.
Scott: Thank you guys for having me.
K&A: You have a great day
Scott: You too
K&A: Scott Stapp. Awesome
