Scott Stapp Q&A

Creed.com November 14 2001

dBarone: If you could interview anyone in all of history, who would you like to talk with...dead or alive?

Scott Stapp: Let me think about it and I'll answer that next time. What a tough question.

* * *

Lee: Scott, Just curious what if anything do you do to your voice to keep it sounding so incredible,to me its the best voice in music today. Thanks for bringing so much to my life, the gift of your music has made so many happy God Bless You.

SS: Drink a lot of water, exercise, and don't drink any caffeine.

Creedsgirl6969@aol.com: Scott, When everything in your life seemed dark and unfair how did you manage to cope and what influence, if any, did that time have on "My Sacrifice". I lost my best friend on Sept.11th , he was a firefighter, and my Grandmother 2 weeks later. Everyday has been a constant struggle. There are days where getting out of bed is more than I can handle and I wanted to thank you because when I first heard "My Sacrifice" it was as if I had been given a gift to always remember them by. Not a day goes by that I don't hear that song and think of them because God knows "I just want to say hello again". Again thank you and the band for your help in making it possible to find closure and to move on. I love you guys.

SS: In retrospect, I guess I always knew or believed that everything happened for a reason, and that one day I would figure it all out. So I kept my head up and kept moving on and never gave up hope. And took every negative experience and tried to find some good in it even if it felt impossible to do. I'm truly sorry about your loss and you don't know how gratifying it is to me personally that my music has had such a positive impact on your life in your current situation and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

* * *

HomerS3: whats your favorite TV show? i'm a huge Simpsons fan. How about you?

SS: Favorite show is The Sopranos. When I'm not watching that, my TV is always on ESPN.

* * *

Creedluvr: How is your relationship with your family now?-Especially your father? And are they very proud of what you've become? do you have any siblings and if so how is and was your relationship with them? Just wondering...thank you for your time, cant wait for the new album! Counting down the days, literally!lol Take care.

SS: My relationship with my father has been reconciled for a long time now. Remember, some things you see on TV are old and don't represent the present. My relationship with my mother and sisters is as strong as it ever has been. It's great.

* * *

gtrplayer19: What is your all time favorite band? or the most influential band?

SS: U2 and Led Zeppelin. It depends on the day.

* * *

Doug Sorel: Scott, thanks for doing this. What are the best and worst things about touring? How many stops are you planning on for the upcoming North Americas tour? And finally, If you had a choice, would you do you prefer to perform in larger or smaller venues? Ok, so it was 3 questions.

SS: Best thing is the interaction with the fans, the worst thing is the constant travel and being away from home. We're probably going to try and do 160+ dates in North America. Large and small venues each have their own personality, and I can't really pick one as they each have their upsides.

* * *

Dr. Edgepper Naikuu: Question about your U2 fanship Who is yor favoritemeber, and what do you think about thesome of us who thik you look like bono?

SS: Bono and The Edge are equally my two favorite members. And I've never heard the "look like Bono" before, but that's pretty cool because he's a cool guy. * * *

Jovanna: Hi! Was also wondering how did you feel making this album compared to the 2 previous albums? How was the songwriting different? Did you have different inspirations? How would you rate Weathered compared to My Own Prison and Human Clay? Thank you. Rock on, my friends.

SS: It was refreshing, because all of the songs were brand new. For Human Clay, we'd performed all those songs on the My Own Prison tour. so everyhing on WEATHERED has never been performed live. So my excitement about the songs hasn't been affected because they're all fresh to me.

* * *

CreedFan/Houston/23/m: why is the greatest rock band in the late 90s so chided by other artists in rock? who are some rock acts today that truly appreciate creed and it's impact on rock? i know weezer is one of those bands, any others that you know of mr. stapp?

SS: Because they're jealous, and aren't mature enough to handle their personal insecurities in a better way.

* * *

Firestarter: Considering EVERYTHING, is it what you expected it to be, being somewhat famous and making music? Better, or worse?

SS: It's everything I expected X 1000. For the good, and for the bad.

* * *

Candace: Scott, what do you see yourself doing if you weren't a member of Creed? Occupation/career wise. Rock on!

SS: definitely in some form of the entertainment business. Music, film or behind the scenes stuff.

* * *

Super Creedo: Describe yourself using ONE word!!!!

SS: Passionate. (In every sense of the word and how it applies to every form of behavior).

* * *

UnforgivenOne: You mentioned before in an interview that Creed is one of the few bands that kids in rehabs are aloud to listen to... I work in a drug rehab part time and can atest to this...How does it make you feel to know your positive messages in your music is making a difference?

SS: It definitely enhances my sense of accomplishment, and adds to my sense of fulfillment that I'm contributing to the world because everyone should make a difference. * * *

CreedLovinTiger: Have you been flying the flag Scott?

SS: yes I have. In my front yard, on my truck, and on my motorcycle.

* * *

Lee: Scott, Just wondering if you could change one thing about yourself, a bad habit or personality trait you don't like about yourself, What would it be? Not that I think there is anything wrong with you, I think you are perfect!!!!

SS: There's a lot, but if I had to change one thing it would be my temper.

* * *

Myrage: Does anyone cook while you guys are on tour? or do you just eat out all the time.

SS: We have a catering crew at every show, and we get a nice cooked lunch and pre-show dinner.

* * *

Super Creedo: If you could have ONE super-human strength what would it be and why?? (like the ability to fly, walk through walls) Mark said the ability to stop time!!!

SS: To be able to read people's minds.

* * *

Band Member: When you come to a venue to put on a show, do you request any really WACKY things? (Baskets of Skittles organized by color, Oompa Loompa dolls with there heads cut off, Kenny G., Yanni, and Enya Cds to help you relax before you preform, Red toe socks with blue poka-dots) Anything like that? What do you request? Maybe I'll see ya back there sometime!

SS: We're a pretty easy band. We basically just request water, beer and we order take-out after the show. Oh, and Flip always requests Red Bull.

* * *

Myrage: Would you ever pose nude for Playgirl? ...or semi-nude if it was done in a tasteful way? :Inquiring minds want to know:

SS: Maybe. If my Mom gave me permission.

* * *

AzureWinds043: SCOTT, what is the craziest thing you have ever done? Craziest thing a fan has ever done?

SS: Craziest thing I've ever done. Hmm. All I can tell you is that it has to do with Kid Rock and 14 close friends. Craziest thing a fan has ever done happened with Kid Rock and 14 close friends.

* * *

Crazchica: any of you creed dudes plannin on seein harry potter friday? lol, does jagger want to see it?

SS: I just too Jagger to see Monsters, Inc. Unfortunately I'm working in New York on Friday so maybe I'll take him when I get back on Monday.

* * *

Elissa: My little ones told me to FOR SURE talk to you tonite and let you know they LOVE your music and when they'll have a band it's gonna be just like Creed. Eric(4) says he is happy you play "heavy stuff" and makes me sing Creed songs even when going to bed at night. (Not sure what our neighbors think of us LOL) Christian(7) says he wants to write songs that have a positive message like your songs do, "so when people hear them they would hear more than just music" They say a prayer for Jagger, You, Mark and Scotty P. EVERY night! Would you mind to post some words of wisdom or encouragement here for them?! They'd be thrilled to find a message from you waiting for them when they wake up in the morning.:) Thank you! Thank you for making a difference and being such a great influence to me, my kids and so many others.

SS: My message to the kids is that passion breeds followers, always speak your mind and speak from the hear, and do what you love no matter what anyone says. And never read your own press.

* * *

Kristina: Come on, Tremonti answered it... Boxers or Briefs?

SS: Boxers. But sometimes nothing at all.

* * *

girlygirl: How do you know he's divorced? huh what's your source... I wanna hear from Scott.

SS: OK. Once and for all, I am divorced. I've been divorced for almost 2 1/2 years. I do not live with my ex-wife as the rumors have said. I am a completely single man and wish I had the time to meet more women.

* * *

1One1: Hi Scott! This question has been burning in my head since like forever... why do songs like 'Nothing' and 'To Whom It May Concern' get cut from the albums? I think 'To Whom It May Concern' is one of the best creed song ever but it was cut out of Human Clay... Sorry for the whole essay... Thanks!!!

SS: A lot of times, it has to do with the flow of the record. As you know, we're very concerned with how the album is, not just a single. And some songs may not fit the vibe and the journey that we want to take ourselves and the fans on for that particular album. On WEATHERED in particular, we just ran out of time because we wanted to put 13 songs on it.

* * *

Creed Rox01: Hi Creed! I was wondering how the World Trade Center Attacks affected each one of y'all personally? Did it inspire y'all to write any new songs at the moment? Y'all are awesome, Rock on! luv, sherry (bossier city, louisiana)

SS: I think it all affected us differently. But we all grieved just like the rest of the United States and the world. I think its such a catastrophic event that it hasn't soaked in enough yet, at least in my mind for me to write about it. And it probably will now that I'm in New York and am going to Ground Zero. I think that will be the catalyst in dealing with how it affected me through music.

* * *

smile&wave: We're all so proud of you for giving back through the foundation. Society has changed so much and I think we really need to get back to focus on families. What other plans do you have for the foundation? Do you have any plans for taking WAWO foundation world wide?

SS: I hope the WAWO Foundation is the lasting legacy that I leave. I hope it becomes a worldwide organization as big as the United Way or the Red Cross.

* * *

Cat: As a kid, did you have a "closet monster"? Call it curiosity in creativity.... Well?

SS: No, I had a monster underneath my bed. But my son has a closet monster.

* * *

Blue: Which song do you think you will NEVER drop from the playlist... or you NEVER get tired of performing? Or is there more than one?

SS: There are quite a few. MOP, WTLF, Faceless Man, Say I, What If. And I won't know off the new record until I perform it a bit more.

* * *

Blue: I know you've got Screamline coming out, combine that with WAWOF and the Creed career, I know you must be busy. But other than an interest in acting we've read about, do you have any other musical interests that you would like to pursue?

SS: I definitely have an interest in developing young artists and writing for other artists. The rumor about acting is true when I can find the time.

* * *

BlueSlushie: On this wonderful upcoming holiday...what are you most thankful for in your life...in order, please

SS: My son. My family. And Creed. And of course, all those who made Creed what they are---you, the fans!

* * *

Wickedsix: HMost embarrassing moment on stage? Have you ever slipped up with the wrong lyrics or anything like that?

SS: There have been a couple. I once tripped over Brian and landed right on my ass in front of 30,000 people, but I played it off. The other was actually forgetting the lyrics to My Own Prison.

* * *

creedfanaz16: Hey Scott!! I am SO EXCITED for the 20th!! I can't wait to get your new album! I herd that there was some "hidden" stuff in it?? Like what?? All I know is that it is something small because Mark hinted that I would need a magnifying glass! Could you give me ONE more clue??!!! PLEASE! Thanks so much!

SS: Mark was refering to the album cover, but you'll need to listen real close to hear what's amidst the music.

* * *

Sheena: First of all I want to thank you for being an influence in my life and I want to say that you're more than just another celebrity to me you're also my best friend. Second of all I want to say that i'm a better Miniature Golf Player than you, and my friends can testify. Here's my question: Do You Have any Celebrity Crushes and if so on who? Hugs & Hershey Kisses

SS: Too many crushes to answer.

* * *

tailspinner: Hey Scott! What inspired you and Mark to use a boys choir on the Don't Stop Dancing track?

SS: Because of the meaning of the song and the lyrical content-it seemed appropriate and through our foundation a childrens choir was found. Initially, we didn't know it was going to work because there were no female vocalists, but it ended up working out.

* * *

WTLF: Scott, I just want to say thank you for the music you have given us. It has helped me through a lot in my life. On MOP, you seemed frustrated spiritually, but the songs now seem more uplifting. How has your spiritual quest affected your songwriting? Have you "made peace" so to speak with God? Peace

SS: I was very frustrated spiritually when I wrote MOP. And yes, I've found peace with my views on God.

* * *

Cheryl: do you have any special "rituals" you have to do before you go out onstage?

SS: yes. I like to take a very hot shower, and let the steam fill the bathroom and warm up singing our songs in a room full of steam.

* * *

Stewart-Charleston, SC: Favorite football rivalry? fl v fl st? carolina v clemson? go cocks!!

SS: Alabama vs. Auburn. Roll tide!

* * *

Royal Blue: You are quoted in the Billboard article that there was a difference btwn. ancient Cherokee and modern Cherokee (language). Why did you choose to use old Cherokee chants as opposed to modern? Not being very knowledgeable on the subject, what is the difference? BTW, Congrats! You're a terriffic performer!

SS: The Cherokee Indian chants changed and evolved over time and became more modern, referencing their more current plights. I chose the one on the record because the meaning on that chant was more relevant than the modern ones. I had Bo sing several modern and ancient and the ancient one was the most relevant.
