Go To 'Prison' For Free With Creed

Launch.com July 16 1998

Hard-rockin' Creed are the unlikely purveyors of Internet history. No, they're not offering their own Internet service, a la superstar/ businessman David Bowie (myLAUNCH, 7/7). Creed's deed simply consists of offering visitors to their official website a free, Net-exclusive download of one of their songs.

The historical factor: Creed's free download--an acoustic version of their smash hit, "My Own Prison"--marks the first time ever that the complete version of a No. 1 radio single has ever been made available at no cost to the public via the Internet. The track is accessible at the official Creed website, www.creednet.com.

According to Alan Meltzer, CEO of Creed's label Wind-Up Records, the idea to offer the free single came from Creed frontman Scott Stapp. "Scott visits the [Creed] site daily and felt this was something he really wanted to do," Meltzer stated. "Combining Creed--a grassroots phenomena--and the Internet--a grassroots medium--was a natural."
